Live At The Remedy – 1998

From the mid 90s through the early 2000s, the epicenter of Philly Hip-Hop culture could be found every Monday night at a small second floor nightclub directly off South Street. That club was Fluid, that night was The Remedy, hosted by Cosmo Baker & Rich Medina. This was more than just a weekly party though – this was the embodiment of a thriving community, where the Citizens of Illadelph would find common bonds and seek release and solace through the rhythmic pulse of beats and rhymes. We created our own space there, a world where we were the masters of our own dominion. And that world was shared equally for all. Threaded through the evolution of the music at the time, through the rise of independent movement, concurrent with the very beginning of the Neo-Soul scene, The Remedy became THE DESTINATION for music and culture lovers alike.

It would not be unlikely to have a packed house of locals and loyal partygoers mingling with luminaries from out of town, everyone from Andre 300 to Lauryn Hill to (NSYNC era) Justin Timberlake shaking it while world famous DJs – everyone from Kid Koala to Madlib, Questlove to DJ Craze, Bobbito to Goldie – would play the most underground and obscure tunes to a hungry and receptive crowd. And it was also not unlikely to have some immense talent jump up into the DJ booth and grab the mic, whether it was local talent from the Philly Neo Soul movement, or Slum Village, or Pharoahe Monch, or Bahamadia, or Kurupt.

On this particular night in 1998, it was DJ Jazzy Jeff on the ones and twos, and we brought up Philly’s own Black Thought to bless the mic, followed by Common who ripped it to pieces. The freestyle session continued with Dice Raw, Scratch, Maylay Sparks and Rehani… everyone in the pocket. Also you can hear Black Thought kick a bunch of the rhymes he’d later on go and use on the masterpiece album by The Roots “Things Fall Apart”.

And yes – we recorded it. PHOTO CREDIT: MPOZI TOLBERT #RIPMpozi

Cosmo Baker Presents – Episode 1

Good morning y’all and today I’m super proud to release my brand new mix series, “Cosmo Baker Presents” on the new Mixcloud Select program. This is a project that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time now and I’m overjoyed that it finally has a proper home and a great media partner in Mixcloud. There’s been a few different incarnations of this idea that I’ve played around with over the past decade of so (my Top Ten Mix, the Baker’s Dozen series etc) but now with #CBPresents its fully fleshed our and realized. Ultimately what I wanted to do with this series is to have a platform where I could present to my listeners all the amazing new music that I find from around the globe. So much of this great material doesn’t get the amplification that it deserves, whether that being because it’s getting more and more difficult to break new records in a club environment, or because of the tremendous amount of material that’s saturating the market, or because people are more dependent on algorithms these days, or simply because it just slipped through the cracks. For the better part of 3 decades I’ve dedicated myself to exposing my friends to sounds that love me, and that deserve to be heard, from across the spectrum! This is a true labor of love for me and I’m more than psyched to give this to you. On top of sharing the music part of the idea is to share the stories behind the music, so we’ll be taking a closer look at records, artists and music scenes that are making waves. So expect a lot of new stuff, some rediscoveries, exclusive content, interviews, guest sets and more. To be honest this whole show is pretty much inspired by the late great John Peel so with Cosmo Baker Presents I’m trying to do my version of The Peel Sessions… also as part of the Mixcloud Select program it’s designed to bring the listeners – y’all – closer to us creators, both me and the artists that I present! Okay with that in mind I’m more than excited to present my first episode, featuring new music by GoldLink, Lizzo, Anderson .Paak, Kid Sister, Kaytranada, Talk Black Guy, Little Simz, A-Trak, Black Thought and more. And we’ll take a very special look at Sault – an incredible new band from out of the UK, and the story, the mystery, and the movement behind them. Let’s get ready for liftoff! Link in the bio!
