All the way live from the 215, this past Friday night before my Get Lifted monthly with Rich Medina & DJ Mike Nyce, I had the honor of dropping by Eavesdrop Radio hosted by my homies Junior & Lil’ Dave, on the legendary WKDU Philadelphia 91.7 FM. Unfortunately the night before, my laptop started to go on the fritz and in order to get it back in working order, I had to do the full-on “clean erase & install” jazz that sometimes is the thing that has to happen. So I did what any DJ worth their salt would do – I packed two bags of vinyl (one with 12″s and one with 45s) and I headed out and played an impromptu all vinyl set. I think I’m gonna have to start to talk about vinyl, why I love it, and why it is still very important. But this latest episode of The Walking Dead is about to set off so I promise to revisit this topic soon. In the meantime, thanks to Junior & Lil Dave for having me, for Chris for helping set this up and big up to WKDU for being the shit for as long as I can remember.

This past Friday I shot out to Vancouver in the Great White North that is Canada and finished the last date this year of my quarterly residency at one of the best spots to play and to party, Fortune Sound. Truly an amazing and magical night and one of the best gigs that I’ve played at all year. Don’t really know what else to say about the folks up there but they really are amazing and supportive.
I’m looking forward to a whole year of great times up there, as early as this coming March. Big respect to GMAN, Rob Rizk, Ere’n, Yoshi, Brendan Butter, Rhek, Nina Mendoza and all the party people who came out and went off to my sounds. Y’all are absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to do it again. Definitely check out the Fortune Sound Blog for all sorts of cool stuff, and peep my presence pon de blog to download some live mixes from Fortune, just in case you can’t make it out next time, including the very latest.

Happy birthday to Michael Jackson – still to this day probably the greatest performer that ever walked the planet. I remember vividly the day that he died… I was in Calgary to do a show at one of my favorite spots on the planet, Hi Fi Club. News started streaming in that MJ had become sick, and as the hours passed, the story got darker and more ominous. When it was finally confirmed that he had left this planet, I walked out of my hotel room, leaving a broken Twitter and Facebook and a screaming CNN behind. I was in a daze. How could it be that Michael Jackson was dead? He was superhuman. He was a deity. MJ was a cultural constant, someone whom I felt as if I had grown up with, and whom it seemed I would grow old with.
That night at the club, I was planning on doing a set of the raps and the club musics but at the very last minute, I scrapped all my plans and decided to go in with an unscripted all MJ set. What I thought was going to be just a handful of joints ended up being the entire night, over 2+ hours of hits, rarities, collabos etc… The night went way past the recording here, early into the morning while the doors were locked and people continued to dance to The King Of Pop. Here’s the mix, hosted by my folks at Mad Decent.

I was lucky enough to have been able to roll through Portland with my Do Over family early in July for the second installment of the season up there. It was truly an unforgettable time, the time of my life. Not only was the vibe and the energy just insane, but I was celebrating my birthday while I was rocking. I’m grateful for having been able to be there with so many good friends, and extra special shouts to my dear friend Connie for hooking up so many special dimensions for the trip, as well as my cousin Katie for just being one of the best people on the planet. Check some of the local press here for a PDX perspective recap. And, as always, all the sets are recorded for your enjoyment, so shoot over to The Do Over Blog and check the recap, or click here for Cosmo Baker “Live At The Do Over Portland, July 10th 2011”
