Cosmo Baker All Vinyl Mix from The Do Over Miami 2010 Hosted By Aloe Blacc

The Do Over WMC Miami 2010

OKAY! So since I’m playing in Miami this Saturday for the second time in 2 weeks (YOU BETTER BE THERE) I thought I would bring back an oldie but a goodie! Here’s my ALL VINYL set from. It’s my ALL VINYL set recorded at The Do Over in Miami during WMC 2010. Me on the turntables, Aloe Blacc hosting, vibes abundant. Recorded live at BAR in Downtown Miami on Sunday March 28th 2010. All vinyl, a little tipsy off the sangria, wearing the dashiki so you know it’s going down…I’m playing a lot of 45s and also 12″s and it’s funk and R&B and rap and breaks and disco and stuff… It was a truly amazing day!

I was fortunate to have The Do Over’s own Aloe Blacc handle the hosting duties that afternoon, and the DJs that played that day is kind of a line-up made from heaven. (thee) Mike BRich MedinaJeremy SoleDJ MaseoVikter DuplaixDaz-I-KueJeremy Ellis… And I had be difficult and play RECORDS hahah. And this was either the day that ‪#‎Vibes‬ was born or it may have been ‪#‎SharkAttack‬ I am not sure. But it was definitely vibey. I was wearing my dashiki at that. Anyway. SoundCloud took this mix down a long time ago but I just reposted it on Mixcloud and if you’re thinking of some good tunes that you may wanna hear in a sunny backyard BBQ style then this may be it.

Extra shout to one of Miami’s finest Mr. Brown I woke up that morning in Miami and I knew that I wanted to play one of my all-time favorite records, Idris Muhammad “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This” but this is vinyl and I couldn’t just download this song and make it appear in my crate. But I put the word out there and halfway through my set Mr. Brown showed up and handed me off a copy of it on 12″ (and for those who aren’t record nerds and may be unaware of the significance it’s a pretty rare, pretty expensive record.)Anyway, I was happy to end my set by playing that song in full, making me – and a few other people I know – very happy!

Enjoy… and for more Miami love check this out! (Just an an FYI this was up a long time ago but SoundCloud took it down so thanks Mixcloud to the rescue!)

I hope you enjoy this mix, below in the comments! And if you’re in Miami on Saturday check it out at Basement for ‪#‎BoomboxMiami‬

Cosmo Baker & Matthew Law Live In The Mix

Last month I had the honor of rocking with one of my favorite DJs, the one and only Matthew Law. I would say that Matt (formerly known as DJ PHSH) is one of the best of the new-blood DJs around, but honestly confining him to that little group does him a disservice. My dude is immensely talented, super focus, and an amazing example of people who are carrying the torch for the grand Philly DJ tradition. He’s a DJ who understands what that lineage means –  he has respect for what has come before him, both with the music and the DJs who’ve played it, and at the same time he’s ready and able to push boundaries and seek out “the new”, not allowing himself to get pigeonholed into only playing the safe classics. Matthew Law is the REAL DEAL.

My dude Matthew Law is wildly talented and he’s been proving that in the battlegrounds of the Philly club scene – and continued to do so when he was crowned the Red Bull Thre3Style East Coast Champion of 2013, and on a personal note I knew I liked Thee Gawd when he opened up his Thre3Style set with the Blow The Bird Whistle Bootleg created by yours truly haha. Anyway, aside from me now being roster-mates with the homie (more on that later), I definitely look forward to working together with this brother in the future. We had a great time two nights in a row – first in Brooklyn and then in Philly – and it was recorded so check out the mix. We just had fun and rocked out and enjoyed playing records for some great crowds! So hope you enjoy the mix just as much as we enjoyed making it! And shout out to Tim “Shots Fired” Blackwell for taking the great party photos that you see below, and check out the full galleries from BROOKLYN and PHILLY.

Happy Born Day To Thee Mike B

Today is a great day because a great human being and great DJ was birthed on this day. Big shout out to my brother from another mother Thee Mike B who graced the universe with his presence many moons ago this morning. The world is so much better because you’re here!

Thee Mike B With Hat

Mike is my dude of dudes of course, but on top of that he’s a stellar DJ. Multi-genre purist. Champion of archaic esoteria. And yes, he does things… Forilla! To be honest there’s not a finer human being that I’ve crossed paths with in this short life of mine, a true mensch, and I am so grateful to call him a friend, but also to have heard him rock the turntables, to play alongside him, spent late nights Simpsons watching episodes, in-depth discussions about Daft Punk and 90s indie NYC rap, afternoons at Russian banyas, good late night steaks, having seen multiple continents with him – I think I’ve been on more tropical vacations with him that anyone else in my life (yes, we were just discussing this the other day.)

Cosmo Baker Vs Mike B

My second ever Do Over appearance was on May 17th, 2009. Mike has the honor and tradition of always being one of the DJs for opening day of the season. In 2009 he in invited me to rock alongside him on a 2+ hour 2X4 set which was one of the most fun times I ever had DJing. So here’s that mix for all your enjoyment (streaming via Mixcloud – but also download link in the description) – enjoy!

All 45s Live Mix From Eavesdrop Radio

All the way live from the 215, this past Friday night before my Get Lifted monthly with Rich Medina & DJ Mike Nyce, I had the honor of dropping by Eavesdrop Radio hosted by my homies Junior & Lil’ Dave, on the legendary WKDU Philadelphia 91.7 FM. Unfortunately the night before, my laptop started to go on the fritz and in order to get it back in working order, I had to do the full-on “clean erase & install” jazz that sometimes is the thing that has to happen. So I did what any DJ worth their salt would do – I packed two bags of vinyl (one with 12″s and one with 45s) and I headed out and played an impromptu all vinyl set. I think I’m gonna have to start to talk about vinyl, why I love it, and why it is still very important. But this latest episode of The Walking Dead is about to set off so I promise to revisit this topic soon. In the meantime, thanks to Junior & Lil Dave for having me, for Chris for helping set this up and big up to WKDU for being the shit for as long as I can remember.
